Matt Hanson’s Brain Archive
I believe most of there pictures are from the summer of 1987, right before I started High School. Here are my early attempts at playing with double exposures and taking pictures of my friends looking goofy. There are also some outside shots I took in the field behind (the neighbor) Mrs. Nealy’s barn.
The last thing we did was to do some studio work at the Victorian House that is owned by the Workshops. We could use whoever we wanted in the class. So I chose everyone so I could get a group picture.
Popham Beach is a state park about 14 miles from Bath (Maine). There are pictures of the beach as well as the fort that is there.
One of our last assignments was to take some themed sequence shots. I used Andy, Jason, and B (one of the girls in the Workshop with me) as subjects. Hopefully the ‘plot’ of the photos is apparent in the first half of the pictures. The rest of them was me playing around more with some shorter sequences.
Andy and Jason came down for a visit. I took the oppurtunity to use Andy as a subject for some portraits.
The Workshops first introduced me to the concept of the hipshot which I have always very much enjoyed since. Hipshots are taken ‘at the hip’ in an effort to go unnoticed and be unobstrusive. Of course this is primarily to take photos of people, and is particularly useful in crowded places.
Later that night there was a Lobster dinner back at the Workshops dining area.
Perry’s Nut house in Belfast is quite a silly tourist attaction. Worth a stop if you are ever near the area.
Maiden’s Cliff overlooks Lake Megunticook near Camden, Maine. As legend has it a 12 year girl named Elenora French fell to death when she was trying to catch he hat that had blown off in the wind.
This is the second roll of film I took on Vinalhaven.
Vinalhaven is an island in Maine that we took the ferry to for the sole purpose of taking photos around the island. There are pictures taken all over the island - both of places and people.
The first assignment was some simple EI (Exposure Index) to find out the best way to shoot the film (push it or not), and the development time. We also needed to take ’self-portraits’, which could be anything from photos of ourselves to photos of our things.
Various family pictures, Christmas and my brother Paul’s 4th birthday. Also pictures of Moosehead Lake.
Before the year 1970 my brother’s Paul and Brian were just being born and I was still a few years off. These are images of a Wedding, family shots, Paul as a baby, and scenes of Chatham in Cape Cod. Many of the pictures of my grandparents and their friends are quite blurry.
My Dad took a lot of pictures of events, parades, and places. Among other things, this gallery contains a Memorial Day Parade and a large Shriner’s Parade in Bangor, ME. in the years 1968 to 1970. Also is pictures of Ed Muskie at Bangor Airport during a visit. It is probably during the 1968 election for which he was the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee.
These pictures include a trip to Bar Harbor with the Kelehers, my Mom’s graduation from UMO, my confirmation, and various summer images in Cape Cod and Hampden.
